CHANGE
As the end of summer draws closer and closer, so does the imminent idea of change. Whether we are heading to college for the first time and leaving our childhood behind, ending a vacation that you looked forward to for so long, or even just the thought of going back to school in general, we will soon be dealing with a bigger amount of change than we realize. The end of summer always brings a bittersweet feeling knowing that we will soon be changing routines again - waking up earlier, having longer days, seeing different friends. Endings and new beginnings are weird this way, you’re excited about the unknown but scared to leave the familiar behind.
Dealing with change has always been a weakness of mine and many others, humans are creatures of habit and we seek routine and comfort. Yet over the years, I’ve realized that change is scary, but it’s even more terrifying to stay the same. Life is a journey of constant growth and we aren’t meant to stay in the same position forever. That’s the fun part of it, we never know what’s coming next and where our future will take us. We have to get comfortable being uncomfortable, and just trust that we are exactly where we need to be and everything will come to us at the right time.
When making big decisions and life changes, give yourself grace. Take all the time you need to think, and don’t let anyone impact what you’re going through. It’s okay to be sad about making a change in your life but knowing it’s the right decision for you. If you’re going through a big change, it’s also important to remember that nothing is permanent, good or bad. This is the idea of impermanence - wherever you are, whatever you’re feeling will not last forever. Embrace the changes in your life, feel the fear and turn it into excitement about where it will take you.
Lastly, for anyone heading to college soon, we wish you the best of luck! We got a lot of requests to write this blog about change, and we hope this helps you in your transition. College is going to be a great time in your life, and if it isn’t at first, give yourself plenty of time to adjust and find your footing. There will be so many new opportunities, friends, and activities for you to explore which can be overwhelming. But trust the timing of your life and know that you are right where you need to be, and will get everything you need at the right time. You all are going to do amazing!
